She is a CURVYGIRL star -- I think we will be hearing great things from Miss Shannon.

Shannon SutherlandHi, my name is Shannon Sutherland and I am an actress, comedian, and most importantly a fashionista. When I was 18, I moved to New York to become an actress and attend NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.  I did well but my teachers always said the same thing about me, “She’s talented but if she wants to make it she has to lose weight.” After my freshman year I decided that I would return to college in the fall thinner and happier. That summer I spent all my time working out and dieting. When I returned to school my teachers were really pleased with my thinner frame but now they had a new complaint… that I had no personality. They were right but the reason I had lost my personality was because all I could ever think about was how hungry I was. Eventually I developed and eating disorder and had to seek treatment.

At first I didn’t want to get better because I thought being thin made me more fashionable and that it would help my acting career. My therapist told me that I should try stand-up comedy because I am naturally funny and that there isn’t as much pressure to be thin. It was love at first sight for stand-up comedy and I because I felt like I finally had a place where I could be myself. Eventually
I realized that that confidence is what makes you fabulous not being a size 0... and now I am happier than ever. I still work out and try to eat right but it's not the end of the world if I eat a brownie.

The first time that I came upon Patty’s website CurvyGirlStyle.com I loved it and felt like it was written just for me because it’s all about fashion and loving yourself.  It’s not easy being a curvy girl who is in the entertainment industry and loves fashion. I’ve lost parts because I was too big in certain people’s eyes and when I go shopping some of my favorite designers don’t even carry my size. Patty’s Curvy Girl website made me realize that there are lots of fabulous girls just like me and that it’s ok to be a curvy girl.

With a keen eye on breaking trends and a finger on the pulse of what's hot, our own fashion insider, Patty Hughes, brings the catwalk to your sidewalk. Here she tells how she got her start and takes you backstage to New York's Fashion Week.

From the moment I saw Unzipped, the documentary that profiles fab designer Isaac Mizrahi, I knew I wanted to be a part of the fashion action. So, I packed up my bags and hair dryer, and moved from Buffalo to the Big Apple.

My CurvyGirl Models

The Rachael Ray producers called me on a Friday — stated, “Rachael and the executive producers have seen your web-site. We love the idea of it and we want to work with you. We want to tape a segment with you on Tuesday.”

It happened that fast! So I called up my CURVYGIRL friends — “Hey, you want to be a model on The Rachael Ray Show?”

Needless to say, they were over-whelmed.
My friends are fun & positive CURVYGIRLS so I knew they would be right for the show.

In addition, here are  comments from my two CURVYGIRL models:

Ashley

Growing up as a curvy girl was never easy, but as a young women your going to go through awkward stages in your life no matter what you look like!

After a lot of growing and soul searching I have come to embrace my life as a full figured women, I say “You only live once” and life is way too short to worry about how you look to everyone else.  We must redirect our attention to the positives in life – being healthy, smart, being a great friend/a good listener etc…

There is so much pressure in society to be perfect but the reality is that women are not perfect; we are only human just like men!  For this reason I volunteered to be broadcast throughout the nation on the Rachel Ray Show embracing my figure and helping society to see that thin is not the only way to live!

Women are smart, talented, beautiful individuals that should be strong and carry themselves with confidence.  I hope that through becoming part of this website and working with Patty Hughes for the Rachel Ray Show that girls and women everywhere can stop looking at themselves in a negative light and embrace that being a strong, bold and curvy women is a positive and uplifting way to live life!

Stay forever strong,

Ashley Jones
